Up from Slavery, Down to the Ground Sailing Amistad. A Movie Review

Up from Slavery, Down to the Ground Sailing Amistad. A Movie Review It is difficult to nail down why verifiable films are so difficult to shoot. Regardless of whether it is the contention of a longing to both remain consistent with the source material and at the pointless endeavors to whitewash the history, or basically the powerlessness to delineate each and every authentic occasion without including to a great extent nonexclusive characters, verifiable motion pictures unquestionably offer a plenty of difficulties for both the executive and the cast. Misrepresenting chronicled realities as far as possible, Amistad yet offers an exceptional encounter and adequate nourishment for thoughts.Advertising We will compose a custom exposition test on Up from Slavery, Down to the Ground: Sailing Amistad. An explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More The plot of the film is fairly muddled, for the most part since it depends on genuine recorded occasions. At the very beginning of the film, the crowd is quickly taken onto the Amistad, the boat on whi ch Africans are taken to Spain to become slaves. Hence, the film promptly illuminates the crowd about the settings, which are the XIX-century USA. Further on, Senjbe Pieh, otherwise known as Cinque, one of the slaves and the movie’s fundamental hero, is acquainted with the crowd. He figures out how to discharge himself and the remainder of the Africans; from that point, they murder practically whole team. Captured in Connecticut, the Africans are to experience the preliminary. After a scope of unreasonable activities towards the African blamed, for example, changing the adjudicators from kind and thoughtful Juttson to relentless and pitiless Coglin, the Africans almost lose all expectation. In the end, the advodate, John Quincy Adams, conveys his last discourse: â€Å"The Declaration of Independence? What of its vanities? All men made equivalent, unavoidable rights, life, freedom, etc? What in heaven's name would we say we are to do with this? I have an unobtrusive suggestio n† (Amistad), and tears the Declaration in equal parts. The Africans are free. In any case, the way that Cinque discovers that his family has been sold into bondage as he gets back adds an unpleasant note to the film, as though saying, â€Å"There is still a great deal to be done.† Rethinking the movie’s criticalness, it is generally sensible to begin with the lead character. Despite the fact that the crowd without a doubt feels for Cinque, he is very convincing. It is worth thankfulness that the film doesn't depict him as a saint, transforming him into a paper-slender component of highly contrasting reality; despite what might be expected, there is a great deal of discussion about him. In addition to the fact that he starts a revolt on the boat, yet additionally murders one of the team individuals. Cinque is a crook, which makes the accentuation on equivalent rights considerably more grounded †he should be indicted as a human ought to be, not simply sent to a slaughterhouse like a monster: â€Å"Give us, us free† (Amistad).Advertising Looking for exposition on workmanship and structure? How about we check whether we can support you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More As for the supporting cast, the brought characters work very well into the general tone of the film. Which is much progressively significant, they not just fill in as the developing foil for Cinque, yet additionally help to recount to the story and make it increasingly realistic. For example, Van Buren is depicted in a quite certain way. He is certainly not an antagonistic character, yet something in the middle of, a man who needs neither to have the notoriety of a beast nor to break the state balance, conceding fundamental human rights to the African individuals: â€Å"its the autonomy of our courts that keeps us free† (Amistad). Indeed, even John Quincy Adams, the verifiable figure clearly utilized as a plot gadget, adds a particular epic energy to the film. Indeed, his character curve on occasion is much more fascinating than Cinque’s; for instance, it is very unconventional to watch him changing from enthusiastic talks (â€Å"You and this youthful purported legal advisor have demonstrated you comprehend what they are. Theyre Africans† (Amistad)) to giving strong bits of proof over the span of the preliminary (â€Å"How is it that a straightforward, plain property issue has should now wind up so honored as to be contended under the watchful eye of the Supreme Court of the United States of America† (Amistad)), from wry (â€Å"in the court, whoever recounts to the best story wins† (Amistad)) to true (â€Å"Give us the fortitude to do what is right† (Amistad)). Obviously, there are not kidding political and authentic blemishes in the film. Senjbe Pieh had just been seized and oppressed a few times before showing up on Amistad; in like manner, Adams was depicted in a too stately way; Theodore Joadson is an invention of the screenwriter’s creative mind; this rundown can go on significantly longer than the film does. Notwithstanding, the enormous concluding point is whether the film passes on its message effectively, and it does †the crowd can feel the misery of the lead character, the film clarifies that equity is the thing that the whole world ought to take a stab at and that each and every person ought to have indistinguishable rights from the others. Henceforth, one can choose not to see a portion of the chronicled blemishes. In this way, Amistad can be seen as a Making Movie 101 †each and every component of the film is firmly interlaced with different ones, the characters are important, and even the components utilized as a trade off between the film innovation and the current standard for chronicled motion pictures of such scale, work for the benefit of the film. In spite of the fact that it has been appropriately purified, it despite everything mer its viewing, not as an approach to render the verifiable occasions, yet as an approach to ensure that human rights despite everything stay a topical issue even in the XXI century. Paul Laurence Dunbar Essays - Paul Laurence Dunbar, Dunbar

Paul Laurence Dunbar PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR Prestigious African-American artist, Paul Laurence Dunbar rose from a poor youth in Dayton, Ohio to global recognition as an author and as a powerful voice for balance and equity for African-Americans (Howard, Revell). He met and connected with other verifiable men, for example, Fredrick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and his Dayton neighbors Orville and Wilbur Wright (Harvard, Columbus). Dunbars individual story, just as his compositions, are as yet a motivation to all Americans (Poupard). Dunbar was conceived June 27,1872 in Dayton, Ohio to Matilda and Joshua Dunbar, previous slaves from Kentucky (Van Doren 296, Columbus). Their family was amazingly poor since Joshua couldn't find a new line of work. Prejudice was as yet solid in Ohio despite the fact that bondage was illegal at that point. To support their folks, Paul and his two relatives did errands like social occasion kindling, raking leaves, and cutting grass (Howard). Matilda consistently gave motivation to her kids by perusing to, supporting, and urging them to be imaginative. She adored narrating, tunes, and verse. This influenced Paul for an incredible duration, and it was she who imparted in him the longing to accomplish (Columbus). Dunbars guardians isolated in 1874, in the wake of having two youngsters. Disregarding this, Paul was as yet ready to accomplish. He composed his first sonnet at age six and discussed openly at age 2 nine (Howard). His first open perusing was on his birthday in 1892. After Joshua left, Matilda had to work in Dayton as a washerwoman to help her family (Columbus). Joshua passed on when Paul was only twelve years of age (Poupard). The demise of Joshua just fortified the bond among Paul and his mom (Revell). Dunbar was mainstream among his cohorts at Central High School. He was the main Negro in his group and was an individual from the Literary Society, proofreader of the understudy distribution, and writer of the class melody at his graduation (Van Doren 296, Columbus). Dunbars first distributed sonnet was called Our Martyred Soldiers. It showed up in the Dayton Herald on June 8, 1888. In 1891 Paul moved on from Central High School (Revell 11-12). After graduation, Paul needed to fill in as a lift kid in Daytons Callahan Building and later as a page at a Dayton court house(Revell 11 ). He had to work at spots, for example, these in light of the fact that a few organizations were hesitant to recruit him on account of his race (Columbus). Dunbars first verse assortment, Oak and Ivy was distributed in 1892 (Howard). Oak and Ivy comprised of fifty-six sonnets, thirty-six of which were later disposed of by Dunbar (Revell p.29) To help pay for the distributing expense and printing supplies he offered the book of sonnet to clients who rode the lift for $1.00 (Columbus). in the interim he kept composition for different national papers and magazines for some additional pay. Paul 3 immediately accomplished a notoriety in his old neighborhood as an artist and as often as possible was welcome to discuss his works for different clubs and associations. Ordinarily individuals would prescribe his books to companions, spreading expression of his abilities (Howard). As a rule, Dunbars verse was acknowledged and popular (Poupard). This landed him a challenge to recount his verse at the main Worlds Fair at Chicago in 1893. Here, he functioned as agent at a Haitian structure where he met Fredrick Douglass and other dark speakers and journalists (Revell 102). Douglass called Paul Laurence Dunbar The most encouraging youthful hued man in America. (Howard). 1895 brought Dunbars move to Toledo, Ohio and the distributing of his second assortment of verse, Majors and Minors (Columbus). Eleven sonnets from Oak and Ivy were imprinted in Majors and Minors. (Revell, p.224). Its distributing was financed by his companions Dr. Henry A. Tobey and Charles H. Thatcher, a lawyer. Majors and Minors grabbed the eye of an acclaimed artistic pundit William Dean Howells. Howells great audit of Dunbar in the Harpers Weekly made him broadly known for the time being (Columbus). Howells called attention to that in history Negros have been talented and effective in music, rhetoric, and a large number of different expressions, yet Majors and Minors was the first 4 case of and African-American who had displayed inborn qualification in writing (Poupard). Following Howells audit, New York distributing firm Dodd-Mead and Company joined Dunbars

Denied by MIT, 5 Years Later

Denied by MIT, 5 Years Later Ive gotten a number of email responses to my blog post about the different paths our lives can take. One of them was from a student whom we denied five years ago. He and I had emailed a bit when he was denied, but I hadnt heard from him since Pi Day 2011; he revived the old thread to tell me what he had been doing in the time since. I thought it was a really nice note, and maybe an encouraging one, so I asked him if I could blog it, and he said I could. Ive reproduced it in its entirety and unedited (except for where I removed personally identifiable information at his request) below. Hi Chris, I wonder if you remember me. I had written to you long ago on Pi Day 2011, when I had received an admission decision from MIT, and I hadnt made it. I am just replying on this old email thread just so you may go through our old discussion. []I couldnt agree more that over time, a person makes choices which define him/her, and ultimately most of us usually like the person we have become over the years. You might want to know how I fared in past five years (wow, five years already!). After my high school graduation in 2011, I decided to take a gap year. It was strange, most of my friends from school had gone to college all over country, few of them decided to take gap, but they had their own agenda for that year. I devoted my gap year mostly in reading, travelling and backpacking along North India for two months, and studying amateur Astronomy. I always wanted to come to MIT and be an astrophysicist. Now something strange happened in that year, I would co-ordinate my learning mostly from [a] Planetarium in New Delhi. Me other guys who were in this were expected to make a small java software which would to track Planetary orbits and pinpoint a planets location in sky based on its known coordinates. It wasnt much of a program, but while doing so I realized that I wasnt exactly interested in where that planet would be on a given day in the year, but was more interested in coding the variables of its orbit. I found that I like computers more than planets. Ultimately, next year instead of joining a purely research University on Physics, I joined [a technical college] as a Computer Science student. This college was like 3000 km away from my hometown, it was so weird. I was in a state where I literally knew no one, the people were different, the lifestyle, the climate, the food everything was so different. First semester was tough, but I made some friends, and learnt to cope up with the new life style. As I moved further into my college years, things begun to get better. I was good in computers, and I actually liked working on it, so it showed up in my college performance. The professors liked me, my social life was good, I made many friends. Then in third year things got a bit tough, too much work load etc etc. I would still regularly follow Mit Blogs, some blogs were so inspiring, Lydia and Anna and others, and then those trolls of MQuinn (I wonder if he is still around). I had told you in my previous mail that your Applying Sideways blog was my favorite. It still is. Though it was mainly written for high schoolers, I found myself religiously practising it in college as well. I always did well in my classes (CGPA 9.2/10.0, not bad I guess) would always try my best to be nice to everyone, even to some particularly cruel professors, never said no to anyone who asked for help, even though it would mean taking out some time from my Jam-Packed schedule in third year (mostly I would make time by not sleeping), and always pursued my passion. In college I mentored juniors, got selected as Google Student Ambassador and met many people from over the world, published research paper in my fifth sem, took full time undergraduate research program under my guide for my final year thesis and loved it, found the girl whom I loved unconditionally, rescued stray dogs and cats and kept them as pets, was a member of various societies in college, organized many events, had unforgettable time with my friends, etc. Above all, I was happy being there, so it has been all good. In my final semester, I had accumulated enough credits to leave college early, so I took an internship opportunity from Informatica in Feb this year and moved to Bangalore. I wonder how much these things would have been possible if it wasnt for your blog, specially these two points of it: Do well in school. Take tough classes. Interrogate your beliefs and presumptions. Pursue knowledge with dogged precision. Because it is better to be educated and intelligent than not. Be nice. This cannot be overstated. Dont be wanton or careless or cruel. Treat those around you with kindness. Help people. Contribute to your community. There were moments in college when I actually felt like saying no to people who would ask for help when I would be weeks behind my own college work. But somehow I would be like, yeah sure, tell me your prob. I would tell you a recent example, which happened this monday. I had been back to college as it was our Farewell day, and the girl whom I loved for all these years had sort of ended things with me(apparently, long-distance relationship is hard). I was hoping to talk to her and patch up things with her, but that day was Lab exams of current third years. When they saw me, they would just keep coming to me to ask doubts and stuff, and I would find myself sharing my own opinion of which ques was more important, and how to answer in viva etc. Later in noon when i was free, some younger sister of one of my classmates asked me to review a paper she was supposed to submit. I ended up reviewing her paper in detail, with citations and new methods which I could suggest. All this left me wit h 5 minutes time in evening to patch up things with my estranged girlfriend when she was leaving for home. It didnt go good as I expected, but that day I think I helped around 20 people with their small problems, so I returned back to home with a weird happy feeling. I think that of all your three points in that blog, nothing is more important than BE NICE. I have noticed that if you are nice to people, you will somehow be good in your school as you will be required to research something in order to help them, and that only increases your knowledge :p . Also most people turn out to help you back if you have any problem in anything, including academics. I dont know its true only in my case or for others as well. I always wonder how things would have been if I was selected to MIT, or else if I had gone for a degree in astrophysics (I still pursue it as a hobby), or if had taken up Biology and become a doctor like most of my family. Whatever it would have been, I am happy with how things have turned out so far. And I like what I have become over these years, and your Applying Sideways blog has been the one to shape it. Thank you for it. :) :) Hope things are good at your end. HM

The Single Life Free Essays

Adult Development and career Life Assessment Jan. 21, 2010 With the internet implemented worldwide the dating scene has revolutionized. The single lifestyle in my opinion is slowly becoming a thing of the past, especially with social networking sites such as e-harmony, match. We will write a custom essay sample on The Single Life or any similar topic only for you Order Now com, my-space, or even facebook. How can one define the single life? It depends on who you ask on what kind of definition you will get. In the dictionary single is defined as a relating to the unmarried state or no longer living with. I define being single as being someone who is not actively participating in a relationship with a like minded individual. I have been single for the most part of my life. My very first relationship was my sophomore year in high school. I was only about fifthteen or sixteen years old. Her name was Carla, she and I met in the cafeteria one morning while we were having breakfast before homeroom period started. Even though our high school was very small, I cannot recall ever seeing her before. Once we became friends, we started to date. We would attend school functions, basketball games, choir concerts, basketball games and track meets; as time progressed a little we both got our driver licenses and jobs. This at first was a really good thing for the relationship, due to the fact that we could attend and participate in other functions and activities outside the ones that were primarily school related, for example: the movies, or the fair. One side effect that I noticed from my new experience was that of a wondering mind. I would often find myself not focused on school work or any task for that matter. I would always become distracted when trying to accomplish anything; my attention would immediately be directed to Carla’s and I relationship. This was not benefiting me in anyway. My grades dropped, I became less and less productive at work and didn’t get much rest. Finally I made the decision that if a relationship would cause me not to maintain my focus and career goal that is was not for me at that time. Carla was my first and last serious relationship, and I have made the judgment to remain single until I have reached my educational aspirations. I would like to think that there is no pressure and is a personal choice on staying single or to get married, but it is not like that. Once a person can whole heartedly accept the fact that they are living the single life, it becomes somewhat easier for that individual to interact with others on a daily bases. For example, when a person really and truly feels as if they need to be in a relationship or cannot understand why they are not, that individual could have some problems dealing with others who are in a relationship or someone who is content with the single lifestyle. In my opinion â€Å"coming from personal experience† a person is more likely to find themselves when single as opposed to being in a committed relationship. Being a person who has been in a relationship and single, I can see some pros and cons in both being single and being in a relationship. Attached you will find a diagram with some of the pros and cons. ? ? Pros SINGLE IN A RELATIONSHIP Freedom Someone to share More friendsShared experiences Self-Sufficiency Can Depend on someone Prioritizing Career Two incomes Cons ? SINGLE IN A RELATIONSHIP Lonely Arguments No one to talk toJoint bank accounts One incomeLess time to work Having to cookLess time to focus on school In conclusion I’ve express my view and thought on the single life base on information obtain from personal experiences and article and information researched via the internet. Base on the information presented in my paper I have concluded that being single is conducive to the hectic lifestyle of a young, working college student. I do feel as if everyone needs and deserves someone. Which is why I do not wish to remain single for the remainder of my life, I can honestly say I am at the point in my life where being single is ok and works for me. Rhetorical Functions in Academic Writing free essay sample

Expect to acknowledge everything youve got from a source other than your own head. The things that dont need referencing are your own ideas and common or uncontroversial knowledge (English is a Germanic Language, for example). If in doubt, err on the side of over—referencing, until you get the knack. Having too many references in a text breaks up the flow of your writing, but that is the lesser of two evils. To avoid too much repetition, you may be able to say at the beginning of a section or paragraph: The following is a summary of information given in Smith (1994). Note, however, that it is not sufficient to give one vague reference to your source somewhere, and then draw directly from it for page after page.Rather than just summarizing what you are reading for the sake of it, make notes relevant to the task in hand and identify the major points that relate to your purpose. We will write a custom essay sample on Rhetorical Functions in Academic Writing or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Make the notes under headings; you can then write out your own version based on those points. When making notes, use your own words wherever possible. Never copy anything out without putting it in inverted commas and putting a page reference next to it. Always keep the full reference details for any source you draw on, as you will need them later. These details should be integral to your notes, so that you can easily see where an idea or quote has come from. Where your source text gives examples of a phenomenon under discussion, try to think of some examples of your own (or look them up in a dictionary or another book). This is in any case a good way of ensuring that you understand what you are writing about. However, if you are in doubt about whether your example is valid (e.g. where the examples have been drawn from a particular source that you cannot access), quote the ones you have been given and acknowledge them appropriately. If there is any terminology you dont understand, look it up [or ask your tutor for advice], dont just copy it out. (Wray et al, 1998)

Where Have You Been free essay sample

Where are you going, Where have you been? Stephanie Bumpase AIU Where are you going, Where have you been? The character Connie in the story â€Å"Where are you going, Where have you been? † was a young 15yr old girl in a small town. She was beautiful and knew that she was beautiful. A flat character is a character that stays the same throughout a story (Gioia Kennedy, 2010) and a round character is the opposite of flat in which the character changes significantly (Gioia Kennedy, 2010).So in this story, Connie could be consider a round character because before Arnold Friend came around she was like any other teenager and when he came and put a little fear in her, she became a scared little girl. I fell that Connie was an individual character. Her mom was always critizing her. June was in another category. Connie Dad really did not do or say much. We will write a custom essay sample on Where Have You Been? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page So Connie had to stand on her own two feet by herself. Connie’s mom was a stay at home mom, like most small town people. Her Dad would work long hours and her sister would work and help pay bills and keep the house clean.Like in most towns as well, there was always a parent would drop their teenagers off at the mall or movies and pick them up. This town would do what any other town would do. Connie was like any other typical teenager. Connie was for one, beautiful and two she was a curious teenager. She was into boys like most teenage girls do. Connie likes to look good and keep up with her image. What changes that occurred in Connie are when she went to the drive-in and she took that ride with that boy. And when her sister asked her how the movie was, she said it was alright. There was an antagonist-protagonist between Connie and Arnold. Connie was the protagonist and Arnold was the antagonist. Arnold kept telling Connie that she was going to take a ride with him. He kept on and kept on with her and he told her also that she was his. She didn’t want to go anywhere with him and she insist that she was not going. What you later learn about Connie is that she started out as a happy go lucky young lady. She then became a brave young lady when she talked sharp back to Arnold. Then as the story continues, you see that Connie was a scared little girl. Her mom was always comparing Connie with June. Her mom wanted Connie to be more like June and her father never said anything. June really didn’t hang out with Connie. Through the music and this strange guy showing up, Connie was amused at first. Connie kept talking to the Stranger to figure out who he was and how he knew her. The shift changer of the story was when Connie question Arnold his age and seen how his looks changed. The theme slowly change when Connie insist that she was going to call the police. Arnold informs her that â€Å"Soon as you touch the phone I don’t need to keep my promise and can come inside, you won’t want that† (Oates, 1970).Some of the major stages were when Connie notice Ellie’s face. She also notices the boots on Arnold that they seem kind of big. Also When Ellie said â€Å"You want that telephone pulled out? † (Oates, 1970). Another major stage was when Arnold said that the old lady down the road was dead. The symbolic contrast between the stranger and the ordinary town’s people was that the stranger was not an ordinary town’s people but a killer. He was in that town, stalking his prey and killing people. Connie action at the end of the story may have been a betrayal to her family because she was dead and didn’t say good-bye.She didn’t let her family know that she would be gone forever. The way the story ended was a tragic. It makes you think that this could really happen to you. It shows that Connie was seeing the light and was going to the light. It could be a warning to let people know to not to trust everyone. She could had called the police when she first heard the car coming down the drive way. That way the police could be coming and her life would have been saved. Parents should always tell their kids to never talk to strangers. The conflict between June and Connie is that they had an age difference.June was a little more reserved and Connie wasn’t. This could tell you in the story, that June was a little more mature. June would pay bills and clean around the house and Connie was young and hard headed. The stranger name was kind of funny. He had a real first name â€Å"Arnold†, but the last name was trying to be a bit funny â€Å"Friend. † Friend is a statement that he is everybody friend. The letter â€Å"X† means that Connie was going to be Arnold next victim. Like the saying â€Å"X marks the spot. † Connie’s action compare to today generation is the same.

Taiwan essays

Taiwan essays Initially, Taiwan was not an island; the land which is now the island of Taiwan formed an integral part of the Chinese mainland. It was only later that it became an island due to movement of the earth's crust. The study of Taiwan's historical heritage also confirms that close links have always existed between the cultures of Taiwan and continental China. Through constant improvements in technology and international relations, Taiwan will continue to grow and expand throughout the world. This paper will discuss several areas of interest about the country of Taiwan including its geography and climate, people and language, history, government, foreign relations, economy, education, and tourist attractions. Taiwan is located in the Western Pacific about 160 kilometers off the southeastern coast of China, midway between Japan and the Philippines. The island of Taiwan is about 394 km in length and 144 km wide at its broadest point Taiwan has five longitudinal mountain ranges that cover almost the whole area. Its tallest mountain, Mount Jade, peaking at an incredible 3,952 meters. The island also consists of volcanic mountains, foothills, tablelands, coastal plains, and basins. In July, the average temperature on the island is about 82 degrees in July and about 57 degrees in January. Summers are usually hot and humid, and last from May to September. Winters are fairly mild and only last from December to February. The average rainfall is about 98.5 inches per year. (www.tecro.com) In 1544, the island of Taiwan was found by the Portuguese as they were on their way to Japan. They referred to it as llha Formosa, or beautiful island. Between 1662 and 1684 Taiwan went through many rulers, including the Dutch until 1684, when Taiwan was made a province of China, and it was there that they had their first governor. Throughout the next 65 years, Taiwan still was not at rest due to the constant wars and incidents surrounding the land....

Science and Grammar Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Science and Grammar - Essay Example At the same time, science becomes meaningful when it is disseminated to a large group of people. Some people are likely to ignore these facts, but doing so is just refusing to accept the fact and reality. With this in mind, some students and people at large may question the importance of having to write scientific issues and concepts correctly with no grammatical or spelling mistakes. There is no particular and specific definition of science, as more definitions are likely to be created by different people in different academic fields. However, in most cases, science can be perceived to constitute intellectual and practical activity, which may involve the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment (Ray 2). Science from this simple definition can be seen to be important and critical to the lives of people and in the generation and dissemination of knowledge. Students may think that, as long as the main idea in the scientific knowledge has been advanced to the reader, there is no big reason to worry and have concern with regard to grammar and correct spelling. The students may think that these aspects are not important in scientific world. However, students have to know this is not the case or is not a position, and as a teacher, I can support. Just like the way grammar and spelling considerations are important in other fields, students should know that the same applies in scientific world. Just imagine reading scientific piece of knowledge that is full of grammar mistakes and spelling. First, as a reader of such article, one is likely to consider the writer not serious with the work or even the writer to be careless. Moreover, the reader of such article is likely to be discouraged or even to become disinterested in reading such an article from the world go. As a result, the scientific

Dialogue between an Atheist and a Theist on The Problem of Evil from Speech or Presentation

Dialogue between an Atheist and a Theist on The Problem of Evil from Hick - Speech or Presentation Example Amy: Uhh...I guess so. Why do you ask? John: Well, a retired old man doesn’t have much to do these days, and I want to see what these professors are teaching you kids these days. But let me ask, how come you are reading Russell? Are you an Atheist? Amy: Yes. John: May I ask why? Amy: See, my main problem with believing in God, is that when you look around the world, there are so many problems. Not just small problems, but real, serious, heartrending problems. There is world hunger and starvation. There is violence, hatred, war and genocide. There are natural disasters like earthquakes, floods and volcanoes, which wreak havoc and cause terror amongst fellow humans. There are egregious crimes we commit against each other, like rape, kidnapping and murder. If God really exists, how could he ever allow all of these terrible things? John: Ah, I as most other practicing Christians have ran into some of these existential type worries, which have caused me to doubt my faith. But in th e end, after working hard and maintaining my relationship with God, the answers have been revealed to me, and my faith has in turn become stronger. Amy: That’s all well and good to the practicing Christian. However, I admit that I am not too familiar with the bible, many of your religious teachings, and your personal esoteric spiritual experiences, so before we can have this discussion, we are going to have to define God in purely ontological terms. Exactly what sort of entity is God? What are his characteristics? John: Fair enough. As a theologian, I had to read many of the works of the great metaphysicians back in divinity school, so I am comfortable having this sort of discussion. It seems to me that God would have to be the best possible being, with all the best possible characteristics. Amy: And why is that? John: Because as the creator of the Universe and all of being itself, God must be the best possible being because nothing created can be greater than its creator. Am y: But certainly you have seen instances where a child grows up to be far more powerful and noble than his or her parents. Is this not an example of a creation being greater than its creator? John: Well in my opinion God created humanity. So even though a child may be born from parents, they descend from a long line of human history that started with God’s creation of Adam and Eve, and thus are technically God’s creation. Amy: Well, that theory may work for you. But it assumes the existence of God, and that God created Humanity. However I do not believe in God, and I believe that life evolved on Earth. John: Touche my friend. It’s good that you caught me in my assumptions. I must point out though, that even if you believe in the theory of evolution, their parents do still not create children. Rather, human genes are passed on through Natural Selection. If the female attracts a strong mate with good genes, and the chance combination of those genes results in stro nger offspring, then it seems it’s not the case that the parents are creating the children. The situation can better be described as resulting from the biologically necessary process of natural selection, combined with luck in the genetic lottery. Amy: Wow, I must say I am impressed by your knowledge of Biology! You are certainly no ignorant believer, who detests science and seeks to explain everything strictly through religion. And I admit that what you say is true. Furthermore, I cannot think of any more counterexamples to the assertion that no creation turns out

Indian watch industry

Indian watch industry Indian Watch industry is estimated to be around 1600 crores and Titan is riding on top of it with a market share of over 50%.This is a super brand that has changed the way we look at ( or wear) watches. A marketing success story, Titan is a brand that will be of interest to most of the marketers. Titan , a brand from TATA was launched in 1987. During that time Indian watch market was dominated by HMT . At that time watches were seldom stylish and was catering to the basic need of knowing the time. Titan changed all that. With its stylish watches and smart advertising ,Titan took the market by storm. Titan infact changed the way watches was manufactured and marketed in India.HMT , a public sector company seldom bothered to respond. Titan initially pioneered the concept of Gifting watches. The ads captured the essence of gifting and along with the trendy music, easily caught the imagination of the market.Customers who were fed up with ugly time machines welcomed the brand and Titan had a dream run for many years. Titan faced lot of problems later when the competition began to eat up the lower end of the market. Besides that, there was another problem. The brand was lacking innovation. To be more precise, the customers were bored by Titan. There was nothing new. Gifting proposition was no longer working . During this period, Titan made a big mistake. It wanted to play the volume game. For that Titan launched another brand Sonata. Sonata was a huge success because it was a cheap product but at the cost of the mother brand Titan. Titan was perceived to be a premium brand but with Sonata ( at that time Sonata from Titan) endorsed by Titan took away the premium image from the mother brand. It was a big costly mistake. Titan realised this mistake and took away the Titan brand from Sonata. Now Sonata is endorsed by Tata not Titan. Titan realising that the market wanted something to be excited about watches began an extensive marketing campaign. Titan carefully segmented the market and developed different subbrands for each segment. Sub brands like Edge, Steel, Dash, Nebula , Classique, Royale, Fast Track , Raga, and the recently launched Wallstreet . By having various products / models and subbrands, Titan was able to create freshness about the brand. Titan also moved away from gifting . Titan was positioning itself as a fashion accessory rather than a time keeping device.Titan also found its persona in Aamir. Aamir provided the much needed edge to the brand. Titan was careful in keeping the brand above the celebrity. The ads were fresh and neatly executed. Titan also was pushing another strategy . Watches was perceived as a one time buy and consumers seldom owned multiple watches. So Titan pushed the concept of Matching Watches to Clothes in the recent commercials. Since men are becoming more serious customers of fashion accessories, this is strategy that is worth trying out. For Titan, even if the concept fails, It has created the much needed freshness in the brand.Titan also made its presence in the ladies watch segment. It have a sub brand Raga targeting the upwardly Mobilee ladies in the premium segment. Titan also relaunched the FastTrack brand of watched aiming the target segment of 18-30 yrs old. Earlier Fasttrack was targeted at 20-25 year olds and positioned along the line Cool watches from Titan. Then the company found out that the youth in the age group of 11-20 years account for 42% of watch buying in India. Based on this insight the company relaunched the brand lowering the target segment to 18-30 year olds with the baseline How many you have?. Again the strategy aimed at promoting the multiple watch owning concept. Fasttrack also launched a range of fashion accessories like Sunglasses trying to be a lifestyle brand. Indian watch market is clearly segmented and lot of serious players are fighting out in these segments . The lower volume segment has HMT, Sonata , Maxima fighting it out. The mid segment has Titan, Timex etc and the premium segment has Titan ,Citizen etc. The super premium segment is also hotting up with lot of international brands setting shops in India. Titan has carefully created a market for itself through careful segmentation and branding strategies. It is a brand that showed the world that Indians are good in Branding.

Julia Serano, Whipping Girl Book Review

I found this book as disturbing but yet inspiring as well. This book is about a transsexual male to female. Transsexual is a person who has undergone a sex change operation whose sexual identification is entirely with the opposite sex. I could say that the book is disturbing because as I go through words and sentences, images keep showing up in my head. He was discriminated because of his change of sex and his behavior (girly boy). Being discriminated didn't let him to keep being all sad and sorrow. He stopped himself for being let down by people around him. He really is a brave man for writing the book. In this book, he writes about his experience and his feelings. I could not imagine if I was he. I could not imagine what does it feels like to be in his shoe. After reading the book, I was inspired by him. I think that people need to stop judging and stop discriminating. Everyone either transsexual or normal, we need to be treated the same way. Transsexuals are human too. They have feelings and thoughts. They could be hurt just like the normal people. Normal people don't have the rights to bully just because they think that they are more superior to people like them and try to make them feel like they are the outsiders and make them feel inferior. I did some research and found this video on YouTube. The video is about a transsexual woman, Samantha Lauzon. I think he is the first transsexual ever who has to courage to finally speak out about he life. On the video Samantha Lauzon said that he didn't understand his body and thoughts and Samantha Lauzon didn't know what he was doing. As a child he got bullied and attempted suicide. But finally he realized that he was wrong and he finally realizes the need to change in order for him to be happy. And it is true that as time goes by, it gets better. All the things that happened are really sick and sad. People need to know about them and how they feel. Its people’s job to try to understand transsexuals either from male to female or female to male. It is their job to educate themselves. Ending your life is never the answer. Suicide is the permanent answer or solution to a temporary problem. No matter who we are and no matter what we have accumulated and accomplished and what the position are we in our lives, one thing that we need to know and is certain; you will die and only God knows when. In other words, suicide is really a bad way to solve a problem. One thing that people need to know is; we need to be realistic and true to ourselves. There will always be people who judge us for one thing or another. We are rich or poor or tall or short or fat or thin. What matters is our own self-image. How we see ourselves is what matters no matter what gender you are. To keep a healthy outlook and know that no matter what anyone says you were in fact meant to be here on this earth right now right here just the way you are. Trans, Gay,? Bi or anything. What makes you different makes you special believe that and pass it on the other people.

Assumptions for this model can also be found on the same Annex. Methodology Set up the model, choose the data The sample size of 88 observations is greater than 30 and therefore sufficient to be considered representative of the entire population. Ratings was chosen as the most appropriate dependent variable since the success of a network relies on how many peopl e watch their particular program/movie. An initial multiple regression was then run with all the remaining non-transformed variables against ratings. This resulted in an adjusted R2 value of 36%, meaning the regression equation accounts for 36% of the observed variation in ratings. The standard error was 2. 04, and the t-stats showed that every explanatory variable was statistically relevant except ABN, Month and Day (see    [ Annex 7 ]). Intuitively, some data points possibly could have a non-linear relationship and different tests were performed to see what kind of relationships existed. It was concluded that several did exist an

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder In The Movie As Good As It...

In this day and age, â€Å"OCD† has been commonly associated with words such as â€Å"neat† and â€Å"organized.† While some would believe these qualities to be quite positive, it changes how Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is viewed to the public. People tend to start to disregard the symptoms while unintentionally influencing others into repeating their actions. Unfortunately, many people aren’t properly educated in anxiety disorders. It becomes a big deal when names, such as Hollywood, that have the power to impact thousands of people’s lives, accurately depicts OCD. The movie â€Å"As Good as It Gets† has Jack Nicholson portraying Melvin Udall who suffers from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Melvin Udall isn’t your ordinary, friendly next door neighbor.†¦show more content†¦According to the DSM-5, the compulsive behaviors are defined as, â€Å"Repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed in response to an obsession or accor ding to rules that must be applied rigidly. The behaviors or mental acts are aimed at preventing or reducing distress or preventing some dreaded event or situation. However, these behaviors or mental acts either are not connected in a way that could realistically neutralize or prevent whatever they are meant to address or they are clearly excessive.† Some examples would be hoarding, arranging objects, checking on things such as locks, touching/tapping objects, confessing/seeking reassurance, cleaning/washing, counting/repeating actions a certain number of times or until it feels right, and list making. One of the few obsessive thoughts that Melvin suffers from is his fear of contamination.
